What is KUB?
KUB in English stand for Korsor youth fire fighting organisation.
On of our goals is to recruit boys and girls between the ages of 13 to 17, and train them in fire safety and first aid, through training, play and competitions. We also spend time with other youth fire fighter organisations in Denmark and we hope to get in touch whit some similar organisations from other countries as well.
Another goal is to help the youth develop both psychically and mentally, to teach them self discipline, social awareness and behaviour as a youth fire fighter as well as in society.
We educate our members the official fire fighter education, and we develop their leadership abilities.
We also teach them first aid, and our members have to pass an 8 hour basic course in first aid.
We give the youth an opportunity and experience, they can not get anywhere else, and that is to take part in competitions, such as the CTIF, the official fire fighter Olympics, which is held for youth fire fighter organisations every other year.
Through exchange and summer camps with other organisations such as ours, the members get to know other cultures, languages and cooperation across boarders. This is mostly in Denmark, but we hope that it some day will be possible to do with foreign countries.
We hope to have the opportunity to host a summer camp for youth fire fighters in association with Falck Korsor and other sponcors.
Education
We offer theoretical and practice education in fire fighting and first aid.
The members get to try and work with fire hoses, pumps, hydrants and radio communication, how to perform first aid and CPR, how to use a map and a compass. We teach them how the fire trucks are build.
We teach them how to call the police our back up, and how to treat wounds and small injuries.
Finally our members also get to try what it is like to fight fires and how to use breathing apparatuses.
From idea…
Two employees at Falck in Korsor were talking after getting back from a fire, and they got the idea of starting a youth fire fighting organisation. To start with they contacted another fire fighting youth organisation and planned a trip to see how that organisation worked.
The employees from Korsor were told about the other organisations educations plans for the youth, the material and equipment used and the work in the organisation.
After that a meeting was held at Falck Korsor and 15 volunteers from the station were interested in the project.
…to reality
We had to inform the youth in Korsor about this exiting new opportunity for them, and an advertisement was placed in the local newspaper.
The result of that advertisement was an information meeting for those interested. 17 kids and a lot of parents turned op, and it was decided to create a committee consisting of two instructors from Falck Korsor and 4 parents. |
